Low Carb? or Low Fat? That is the question

Many studies involving thousands of people have been made on diets and weight loss. It was found that cutting back on fat found people heavier after a year than those who cut back on carbs. For decades, there have been studies made about the two diets and it was found that a low carbohydrate approach is the more effective diet of the two.

Compared with low-fat diets, participants in low-carbohydrate weight loss interventions were about two and a half pounds lighter. Those diets that included dietary supplements or meal replacement drinks were excluded.

Despite the constant talk that one needs to cut fat from their diet in order to lose weight, the existing scientific evidence does not support low-fat diets over other dietary interventions for long-term weight loss. The studies did find that low carbohydrate diets were the most successful.

Doctors do say that any diet which reduces portion size and focuses on a healthy balanced range of fresh and unprocessed foods could form an effective route to weight loss. What we need to do is look beyond the ratios of calories from fat, carbs, and protein to a discussion of healthy eating patterns, whole foods, and portion sizes.

Experts say that it doesn’t come as a big surprise that people find it easier to cut down on carbs rather than fat, because dieters find it easier to reduce bread, potatoes and rice than to cut back on fats.

But the fact remains, in order to control body weight, it’s still sensible advice to eat less (restrict portion size) and avoid consuming excess amounts of fat and sugar especially as fatty meat, deep fried foods, cakes and biscuits and sugar-sweetened beverages.
